Default TCT Noise

Can anyone around the Downey area verify that my TCT is the culprit for a rattling noise coming from under my car when the engine is started cold and whenever I tap the throttle under no load....

hmm...

It's oil pressure driven, typically anytime oil pressure is slightly worse you'll hear it more.

-Hot engine
-Low RPM

^ biggest contributors to the issue once its evolved. Doesn't exactly match what you're saying.

that could be the case when you tap the throttle... when your car is starting at cold then its normal, and then it goes away when the engine warms up, that happens to most s2k's even the new ones at low mileage. or if you put in new oil it seems to go away. but as for the throttle thing.. TCT could be it im not sure... Greg knows best

TCT usually makes that noise after the car has been running

you tube videos

its a known issue on the ap1. the chain tensioner is hydraulically assisted by oil pressure. if the oil is too thin the pin that guides the chain has an issue of not retracting all the way.

theres been a debated issue of mobil 1 causing this issue back in the day. its an easy fix...part is about 80 to 130 depending on where you get it

Actually i've been revving the engine right now that its warm and at very low rpm i get the kind of rattling noise by the exhaust manifold/vtec and tct area. it also is pretty loud inside the cabin. I know it isn't the throwout bearing because I get the noise when I depress the clutch in neutral and in gear.

BTW, I use Mobil 1

Mobil 1 fades and becomes thin due to heat easily (like (A) already stated)..... this makes the TCT thing worse because with thin oil there's less pressure, it's also the reason it burns and leaves you with a low oil level quickly. I still like the oil however, especially for the price/value.

If it goes away when you accelerate and stomp on it but then comes back when you return to idle.... that's the tell tale sign of TCT issues.

Remove it and sandblast the worm gear then reinstall..... It's a bitch to get it pinned but it'll fix the issue. Otherwise order a new TCT from honda.

Changing oil will be a temp fix but.... it'll come back.

It could be the TCT or that paper flapping on the pulley. AlexS2200 changed my TCT yesterday, and now my S doesn't sound ghetto anymore

Do a search for sandblasting the worm gear. Billman is the one who came up with the idea and it definitely stops the noise. I've had it done on my TCT and for the last 10k miles there's no noise whatsoever. Saves you from spending $130 when the same thing is just going to happen again.

Try to locate the sound as well, it could be coming from the valvetrain if its not the TCT...

I came up with it on my own too then, the idea has probably been reinvented 50 times lol. Ehh oh well.

If only I had invented the paperclip.
