Default Some musings on an '04 center console swap

I recently upgraded my console and radio door to an '04. I thought some side-by-sides would be of interest. The old console pops right off, and the new console pops right on. As you can see, the new console is much longer and larger; so much so that it now blocks the bottom of the radio door cover, so to remove the radio door cover (you know, the old tug on the open door process) you have to remove the console first.

The recessed area around the shifter knob is rubberized and might hold some stuff better - I used to leave my sunglass case in front of the radio door and it would always slide off, this might hold it now, but I am storing my sunglasses elsewhere, so I don't know what else I would put there to hide it.

The auto-slide-open tray is cool. The dual cupholders are nice. There is a little pop-up tab between them that makes them dual, instead of just a long slot. The front one is a little deeper. However, it isn't quite long enough fit my travel mug between the front wall and the tab, so the mug kinda floats - I make sure I hold it with my forearm while moving through the gears. It also still interferes with the shifter about as much. I also really miss the change tray - no pleasing me I guess! The radio doors appear identical, but I know several people who have had tight fit after upgrading their '03 doors to '04 so I just replaced the whole radio door and surround.

The elbow pad is shorter on the new console cover too, but I haven't noticed that as a problem. Now I wish I had gotten the brushed aluminum shift know instead to match the brushed aluminum interior.

Pics below!

Wow...thanks for the great write-up! I've been thinking about it...since that little silvery thingy around the emergency button got gouged. Can you put your drink in the 2nd cupholder? Would that make shifting with a drink in the cup holder easier or harder than in the pre-04 consoles?

Shifting is about the same no matter which cupholder you put it in... The big rectangle this is both cupholders has its awkward points.

I had these questions before I started - hope I answered some for other people!

JD, I think the console looks terrible with that shift knob! If you like I could take the console off your hands

On reflection, I am just going to wait for Mike (Nicotunes) to leave his roof down at work one day.
