when you double a number, it makes all those number an EVEN number. When u add 5 to it, it makes all those numbers an ODD number, and each ODD number will be exactly 2 greater than the previous number available for choosing. Algebraically it is much simpler to understand why it works:

Let N be the number you chose to to do the "Horizontal Poca"

Then going through the operations

N

2N

2N + 5

100N + 250

100N + 2005 OR 100N + 2004

100N + 2005/2004 - DOB = 100N + YOUR AGE

Therefore, the N falls in the hundredths place and your age in the tens and ones place. Mathematics can be fun but obviously this is coming from an engineer.
