to me that much for a fixed up 3 series is not worth it. the car is nice but for that much i rater buy a porche.

It was between keeping my stock S, modding my S, getting a used Porsche or M3, or getting the new M3 with 100+ more bhp(!). I came up with the same thing too -- pay off debt, save up for a house. I eventually told my girlfriend "an apartment and an M3 is not as cool as a house and an S2000." 
That's my plan!
Minimal mods to the s2k, saving for a house.
