Default San Diegans! Where should I live?

Hey San Diegans, please help me out with your area.

I'm moving to Northern SD for a project and I'm trying to figure out where to live. The client is located in Rancho Bernardo, however I am looking into apartments closer to the beach to make life more enjoyable. I'm considering areas in Del Mar - Carmel Valley.

According to Mapquest, there appears to be two paths to get from Del Mar to Rancho Bernardo:

1. Normal/Boring Commuter Route:
Begin: Carmel Creek Rd
CA-56 East
I-15 North
End: Rancho Carmel Dr.

2. More Fun/Scenic/Mtn Route?
Begin: Carmel Creek Rd.
CA-56 East
Right Carmel Valley Rd.
Right Black Mountain Rd.
Left Carmel Mountain Rd.
End: Rancho Carmel Dr.

So here's the question I've got for you locals: how is the commute between Del Mar - Carmel Valley to Rancho Bernardo on these two routes?

Is Route Option One trafficky during rush hour like Los Angeles? How much additional time should I add to the commute during rush hour?

Is Route Option Two full of stop signs, cops, poor road conditions, and random drivers pulling onto the road out of nowhere?

I'm thinking of route one to head off to work and route two on the way back... enjoying the sunset with the top down.

Or am I going to get nothing but sun in my eye so I should just pick an apt in Rancho Bernardo that's close and convenient to work?

Peeps, please give me a reality check. Your advice and suggestions are appreciated!

Thanks,
Ray

Actuall both those directions you gave are the same. The 56 isn't complete yet so you have to take the other roads right now. Traffic is very little. It should take you about 30 minutes to get to RB from Del Mar. I live in Del Mar now and travel to RB daily, and it isn't really all that bad at all.

They're the same? Thanks for letting me know... you can never be too reliant on MapQuest!

I've found a couple of properties and will check them out next week. I'm excited to finally get onto a project in a cool region.

Thanks guys,
Ray

What area are the places your looking at? I assume your talking about Del Mar/Carmel Valley. It will be nice to have another s2k so close. I actually live in Torry Del Mar, which is basicly Del Mar.

From apartmentguide.com, I'm looking at The Club Torrey Pines, Pinnacle At Carmel Creek, Carmel Pointe, and Torrey Villas in the Del Mar/Carmel Valley area. In RB, my top choice would be Carmel Mt. Ranch.

It will all come down to total cost, and mileage/travel time incurred. The rent, utils, furniture rental, etc. And I usually use a company car to reduce commuter travel on the S... but I'm willing to make an exception because of the location. I've got until March to make a decision.
