Thumbs up Question to the Wheel gurus

Currently I am rolling on 18's and was told that i would get better performance if i switched to 17's.

So the question is:

Would i really get better performance if i switched over to 17's? and What would i benifit from switching to 17's?

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

possibly lighter wheels with 17's which would give you better handling in the curves but other than that

simplified, rotating mass is heavier than non-rotating mass, and the further away the mass is from the center of the wheel the heavier it is rotating.

so yes there is a performance increase but i'm not sure if you'd notice it in daily driving other than a possible smoother ride.

It's not JUST the rim size... you have to take weight and overall wheel/tire diameter into consideration.

You could switch to a smaller size wheel, but if it's heavier than the larger wheel, then it may not benefit you.

Another aspect is overall size, too big is bad and too small is bad for gas mileage. I have no idea if 17" is really the best or not, but lets say it is. You have to take the tire aspect ratio into consideration. People with 18" wheels usually use tires with lower AR than they would on a 17" wheel. So the overall diameter could very well be the same between the two, in which case overall weight would have to be looked at.

I do want to point out this fact though which is sometimes forgotten.

Tires ARE HEAVY...... RIMS ARE LIGHT. My tires weigh more then lightweight rims. They are also further away from center so they affect performance more then the rim.

Lightweight tires really make a difference such as Yoke Advans. CE28n ftw

JMPO on the subject. I'm all about max tire width and least unsprung weight possible.
