Question regarding my first diff oil change
Hi all,
I changed my diff oil for the first time in 4 years since I bought my car. Now is 31k
I did everything on the diy section.
I pumped the mobile 1 75w90 in but I could only put about.8 in and then it starts to pour out, I thought it was over filing so I let it run out then I thought our should hold at least .8qt so I such the fill plug in and stop it.
Now my question is, what happens if I over fill or under fill a differential?
Also I did my tranny too and same thing happened. I pumped about 1.8qt in and it started to over fill.
I think I have about 1.6 or 1.7qt in there.
Also, when I take out the diff drain plug, there was a muddy like slug on the magnet. There was also some large metal sheaving.
I am guessing that muddy is very fine metal shaving that's resting on the plug..?
Should I be concerned?
I'm worry about my tranny and diff for under filling and or over filling

was the car level during the fluid change? if so, then it is fine for the fluid to spill out of the hole, that is how you know it is full. regarding the shavings on the magnet, nothing much you can do really. just change the fluid frequently and keep your eye on it. might also be a good idea to avoid hard launches as to avoid any further damage

I tend to overfill by a bit on both. As for the metal shavings, the drain bolts are slightly magnetic and will attract some metal. Just wipe it clean and it's all good.

I am pretty sure the car was leveled. I even put a liquid leveler(the one with a bubble) on top of the soft top after I put it on all four stands.

you have nothing to worry about. just dont wait 4 years to change your fluids again. you should be doing your brakes and clutch fluid at least every 3 months.

Every 3mo is way too often unless you're tracking as others said, if you're needing it that often you should look at seals etc....
Generally speaking I slightly overfill diffs so long as the seals aren't famous for leaking as they are in some vehicles. Under-filling is a major mistake however, depending on the level it can destroy the diff or bearings, bearings would fail first.
