possibly moving to LA
An employment opportunity has recently presented itself that might be too good to turn down, but it will require moving to LA. My wife and I don't know anyone in LA so I'm turning to you guys. We have lots of questions...
How is the quality of life?
Is the cost of living expensive?
What does rent for an average 2/2/garage apartment or house cost? What is the average sell price for an average 3/2/garage home?
What are the good areas to live? By good areas, I mean modern, quiet, low crime, etc.
What about schools? Are public schools good? Are there lots of good Catholic, private schools to select from?
What is the major grocery store there? Are there like produce and meat shops?
What is the sales tax rate there? And there is state tax correct?
Thanks in advance for your answers.
Tommy

Where exactly is the location of employment? Then we can give you suggestions on nearby suburbs or nice metro areas to live in.
Sales tax rate is 8.25%
Major grocery stores are Ralphs and Vons/Pavillions (no Publix here )
Hope this kinda helps

I'll be the first to ask what we're all thinking:
Do you mean "LA" as in actual "Los Angeles" or do you mean it as "Southern CA?" If you actually mean LA, I apologize, but lots of people use LA as a general term for So. Cal, which is a very diverse and spread out place.
Until then, I'll take the easy questions in no particular order
In terms of grocery stores:
Major: Vons, Ralph's, and Albertson's.
Nicer: Whole Foods, Gelson's, Pavillions
Fringe: Trader Joe's
Ghetto: Jons <--
We have schools. Some of them don't allow guns.
Expect to spend a lot of time in your car if you have any sort of commute. The good news is that if you get in an accident, you're only going 10 miles per hour, and there will be tons of witnesses who can't testify worth a damn because they're too busy on their cell phones.
Cost of living is pretty expensive, not quite up to NY/SF levels, but I have no idea how expensive it is compared to where you are currently.
Rent will vary based on the city and quality of neighborhood.
Oh yeah, and the rule is that if you're moving here, you have to convince two people to leave, thus minimizing our traffic problem.

As alejo and AP2Suzuka are demonstrating above, Southern California is also very accepting of man on man love. If that's your kind of thing, not that there's anything wrong with that.

It's near impossible to list which neighborhoods are modern/low crime, since there are so many. It'd probably be best to find out exactly where you work, then go from there. There are lots of private Catholic schools all around LA County and Orange County. Grocery stores depend on where you live, but for the most part, Ralphs, Albertsons, and Trader Joe's should take care of your needs.
Sales tax depends on what county. If you're going to be in LA county, it's 8.25%, if Orange County, it's 7.75%.
Hope that helps
plus you'll see a lot more s2ks!
