Default no 1st gear

Hi,

I apologize in advance if this is a repeat question. I couldn't find anything relevant in the forums during my search.

This morning I was shifting from 1st to 2nd and I believe I let the clutch out a hair too soon because I heard a grinding. I put the clutch in and pulled in fully down into 2nd.

At the next stoplight I couldnt push the shifter back into first. I can shift through all the other gears fine. But I can't push it into 1st. It feels like something is blocking the stick's path. There is no grinding into 1st, it wont go past neutral at all.

Any ideas?? The car is past its warranty so hopefully I can do something before I take it in.

In the meantime, I have just been doing easy takeoffs from 2nd. Am I doing any harm to the car by doing this?

thanks,

If you go into 2nd or 3rd first, then go into 1st will it go?

Your 2nd gear takeoffs will wear the clutch prematurely, but it's not a huge deal, try to start at low-revs and minimize the time the clutch is slipped, it will be fine. No huge deal there.

The transmission is one of the thing I know the least about on the S2K. That said other's will have more detailed advice. I have my guesses about the problem but it's only speculation. As Mike advised try going from each particular gear to 1st.

Also, when you are holding it into first trying to push it in, can you feel the car nearly want to pull foward or can you hear the syncro spool? A high pitch whine.

Thanks for the advice. I was able to finally get it into 1st (shifted from 2nd).

So now I am able to shift into first again, but it requires some effort (alot more than before).

Any suggestions on this? I seem to be able to shift OUT of first no problem. It just sticks when going into first.

Thanks again for the help.

It may resolve itself. I'm trying to imagine how the syncromesh might be creating this situation. There's a few ways it could be happening.

I agree. Give it some time. Many members lose 5th gear and it comes back in time.

You guys were right, the issue resolved itself. I can now shift easily between all gears normally.

Thanks for saving me the cash I would've spend to have a dealer look at it.
