Default nice hotels in or around LA area?

well me and the significant other are going up north for a few days, and really really not familar with the LA area, but she kinda knows her way around santa monica.. so i was looking to get a hotel (for one night ), around the area.

just looking around, i trust to buy online, but pictures can be decieving. but main question is, looking just a good "known" place to stay. doesnt necesarily have to be in santa monica even downtown or whatever, but has to be nice quality. and hopefully for a good price. really open to any suggestions.

thanks guys.

EDIT*, also somewhere i can trust the S for the nite too.

I work at the Beverly Hills Hotel. A 5 star hotel. The best hotel in the area in my opinon.
Not exactly sure about your price range. The lowest rate is $410 rack. You probably be able to get special rates around $295 or $375. Of course that is all based on availability. Also the valets are very good with cars. FYI Ferraris, Bentleys, and Lamborginis are regulars at the hotel. They may even keep it up front for you. Shutters in Santa Monica is also a very nice hotel. Right along the beach. Don't know the rates but I know they are cheaper.

this hotel is right next door to my house and is very private, with lots of shops and restaurants within walking distance. lots of movie stars stay here because of its privacy, i see the tourbuses all day long and have seen them walking down my street to go get food, there are some beautiful clubs and restaurants in the area. it isn't in santa monica, but it is in the middle of the city with easy access to sunset, beverly hills, melrose, santa monica, that should occupy your vacation.

check the main page as well.

Sorry...don't know Santa Monica...but here's another cute hotel in a great neighborhood (safe for the S, too!) Right across from the Grove/LA Farmer's Market complex, close to Hollywood, Sunset, etc. Room rate is $131 for a Deluxe King. Very hipster hotel...definitely not for everyone's taste!

Check out Citysearch. I can't recommend anything exactly right. The Ambrose is on 20th street (2.0 miles from the water) and is exceptional, but it's not inexpensive (~$165 a night).

If it were my wallet I'd check Hotwire and Sidestep to see what deals you can get and then check Citysearch to see if the place is any good. It's getting cold so you may find a sweet deal somwhere close to the water.

Samira, I never knew what that building was. That's awesome. My parents need to stay there next time. (The Elan on Beverly sucks, btw).
