I used a mutual fund that was rapidly losing money to pay for my S in cash

I consider myself almost middle age / upper lower class ...

then there's the other side, someone living very responsibly, but no one thinks they're cool and they start to feel boring and irritated at being responsible.
I try to live responsibly (no debt other than a mortgage, I save up for something and THEN buy it instead of paying in installments, don't buy flashy clothes or furniture ... um, within reason etc.).

It doesn't matter to me if anybody thinks I'm cool or not. I have a great job, tons of vacation time, am pretty well paid, I own a house, I don't have any debt, my commute is 4 miles one way, I live somewhat near the ocean, I have a lot of good friends, I am healthy, and I have a great girlfriend. Sure, I sometimes envy people who have 60" LCD TVs and eight cars, but then I look at people who are up to their eyeballs in debt, barely getting by, and I feel better. (Wow, that sounds horrible. I'm not that mean, really.)

I worked hard to get where I am, and if I worked even harder, I could probably attain that flashy lifestyle, but I don't want it. "Want" and "need" are too interchangeable these days. Bling will make you happy in the short term, but just remember, when you're wearing diamonds and gold and driving an Enzo, you're enjoying the attention of not only admirers, but crooks and cops.

I'd rather be the anonymous happy guy. To each their own.

Many cases:

#1 Young looking guy, S2000 Fixed up.

Ans: #1 Rich Parents
#2 Paycheck to paycheck
#3 Sign up for a JC college, claim to be poor, get CAl Grant A B C and buy a car. (Free money) Then drop out. You can do this for 2 semesters before they catch on.
#4 Kid is smart w/ a great job.

#2 Middle Age, low income. S2000.

Ans: Lease. #1 2000 down, 299.00 month on Dec. Honda Clearance.

#3 Middle Age, Business owners. (Escalade, Lexus SUV)

Ans: Lease. >6000 lbs, FULL 80%+WRITE OFF. It's a FREE CAR.
<6000 Lbs car, Lease or Buy. 40-50% write off.

#4 Old age.

Ans: Retirement funds.

In summary. Don't judge a person from their looks (looks, possessions, etc). We wear clothes, put on makeup, buy products to create an image of ourselves. Anyone can buy anything. You think a college student w/ a LV purse, Parada Shoes is RICH? Hell no. It's called, financial aid, Parents, or CREDITCARD.

AN average american is 7,500.00 in debt with a Credit Card.

Majority of the rich folks, won't show it. They hide it. Esp. From the IRS.

BC
Unless you incorporate........the writeoffs are a lot more

I'm a mix of #2 and #4, with a little #1 to keep me from starving during the rough months.

That sounds about the same as me (except I'm in the mountains instead of by the ocean ) I accumulated quite a bit of debt in college, mostly due to traveling, but was fortunate to get a very good job after graduating that let me pay that off and start clean. Been debt free ever since

That's the way it is.

As a society matures and makes progress, more people have more money, and can afford to own more expensive, nicer stuff. Just look back 80 years, not all kids wore shoes to school; now who has no shoes to wear?
