what im really wondering is if the people who are stretching themselves ARE in fact happy because they are constantly being praised by people around them. they might be in bad financial shape, but if you think ur the sh$t, then sometimes that's enough. then there's the other side, someone living very responsibly, but no one thinks they're cool and they start to feel boring and irritated at being responsible. this phenomenon feels so britney spears-ish and i get a sick feeling trying to figure it out.
what do u think?

Don't worry L, we still think you're cool
Just playin' with ya. Yours is a question that can only be speculated upon by outsiders. Who am I to say whether someone in debt is happy with their Cayman, or whether the guy rockin' the '04 Accord free and clear is unhappy? All you can do is figure out what makes you happy.
What's more important to you- Living responsibly or living vicariously? What's going to be more important to you in 5 years? How about 10 or 20? What's going to make you happier- taking your girl out to dinner in an S500, or bringing her back to a house? Would you rather drive a stock S2k for 10 years, or drive a fixed up S2k for 3 then have to sell?
Only you can answer these questions...

correct. self esteem is dirctly connected to happiness. what it seems to me is that many people living the fast life will only regret it when something bad happens and they cant keep it up. the way things are set up, you can prolong that behavior for a very long time. so, ergo, i wondered if they can keep up their self esteem/happiness indefinitely.

it's all urs, N. Ferarri on order. women are already lining up at the door of my cardboard box.
I am in the category number 1 and 4 IIRCfrom the first page. I had some savings which i used as a DP (40% of the vehicles value to get financing...) and my dad is making the monthly payments for me.
I am fortunate not to have any debt and have a great car at a young age, so i am content, yet i cannot wait to make some major $$, buy a condo in 3-5 years and then buy a nicer car. I am responsible, i am not going to rent an apt and have a nice 60k plus car which so many people do...
