That does not work with anyone that is worth a damn at negotiating. It's called one of the oldest tricks in the book. If one of my employees tried that crap with me, I would tell them to go ahead and take the other job. I know what my people are worth and I pay them accordingly. If there are better opportunities elsewhere...don't let the door hit you in the a$$ on the way out.

I've been a part of what Brian posted.
2 begged to stay offers both = raises.
Then I ran into endless problems in hard company times... it was obvious what the problem was. Someone now does my old job for about literally half the pay. HAHA ... I'm just laughing to see what a horrible job they do.
