I hate when people argue over things that are clearly there for your safety. Patch the tire properly only if you're able to. If it's on the sidewall and a mechanic says it's not safe, it's probablyyyyy not safe.
Not only are you risking your own life, which I don't care two shits about, but you're going to wreck a perfectly good s2000 and you could possibly take out innocent bystanders as well.
To patch any tire, you need to lay the patch down and use a roller to seal it properly. This is doable, but extremely hard to do around a sidewall and no one will ever guarantee that sort of work for good reason. Next, if you plug it, you're going to need to make that tiny nail hole into a bit bigger hole to push the plug through, thereby reducing the stability of the tire around that area...weak sidewalls are no good...
If you replace only the rears, you could potentially get understeer in the rain, but it depends on how you drive.

I believe this is a fixable situation, of course monitor it from here on out but I don't see the sidewall issue from the pic given here, it seems to be a safe repair but of course a rep would make a better call.
I would suggest as you pull the nail out (with pliers) that you look at the angle it went in. If it does come from the sidewall I'd not bother patching but the shaft of the nail MAY be directed towards the middle of the tire in which case I personally would patch it. The head of the nail has likely been bent flat so it no longer indicates the direction of penetration into the tire carcass so you'll need to look as u pull it out half way or so.

Now a little info on that RT-615 ...
That tire (owned 3 sets) is HORRIBLE IMO here's why:
The tire was made for autocross where there's little time for it to heat up and work well. As a result they were designed to do well anyways, well there is a draw back. The tire gets greasy early actually so bad that even DD will cycle the tire out quickly (heat cycle).
In my experience by the time the RT-615 is at 50% tread the tire is rock hard and useless. I would suggest not running them in the future and yours being at less then 20% left I think it's time to move to a new tire either way. This is why this tire lasts so long on the last 20% or so is because its so damn hard by then. $.02
