Default Moving to California - Help Needed with Apartment Hunting

It's official, my fiancee and I are moving to California mid-July after the wedding. We both will begin new careers in the Santa Monica area. Here's the catch, neither of us live on the West coast so we have to find apartments by looking at internet advertisements all day.

If anyone has a lead about a good place to look or live in a nice apartment that they would recommend, we would really appreciate your help.

It is only the two of us and our dog. I would prefer garaged parking or at least off street parking. I also am looking for a newer construction apartment complex. We would be fine with a large one bedroom apartment. Hopefully, priced under $1400.

Thanks in advance, Josh and Jenny

See you all soon.

I'm originally from Santa Monica, but now live in Illinois for grad school. I can say that if you work in Santa Monica, you don't want to live too far away. Granted it's more expensive to live on the westside, but I would pay the extra couple hundred a month to save yourself the the commute. Something you'll learn immediately is that rush hour on the 10 and 405 freeways is gawd awful.

I would recommend looking also in the Culver City area. It's a nice enough city but without the rent being sky high. Also, it's within a commutable distance to Santa Monica without having to get on the freeway.

Thanks everyone so far for all the tips. I joined Westsiderentals.com and checked the other sites, too. I am leaning toward Santa Monica or Culver City but also finding some good deals in Marina Del Ray. Josh (and Jenny)
