Default Mexican Restaurant in Santa Monica?

I've got some Australian friends staying in Santa Monica for a couple of days, and they want to experience Mexican food in the US.

I'm taking them out tomorrow, but I'm not familiar with the area, so I'm looking for recommendations. I'd like to stay local to Santa Monica, but will travel a little ways for the right place.

And my recommendation for today....Don't eat Mexican food in Australia! The worst meal I've EVER! eaten was at a Mexican place in Melbourne....and that was the ONLY place I found any Tequila in Australia....that was only Cuervo. (Next time, I'm taking my own).

Thanks for the help,

Laird

There is a little place on Abbot Kinney (venice) called the Tortilla Grill. I would eat there at least twice a week when I worked in the Marina. It`s just a tiny little place, but the food is great. Also plenty of weirdos walking around.

That's a Venice trademark.

Go to Lares, on Pico at 29th street. Try the carnitas.

El Cholo is too crowded, kinda trendy IMO.

I'll second Lara's and would add Gilberts at 20th and Pico.
Also good is TiaJuana on Olympic east of Barrington kitty corner from Bed,Bath and Beyond.
I'd skip the chains in SM.
