May be Moving to LA...Where to Live?
#12
Driving from MB to the Grove will probably take anywhere from 45 mins. to an hour.
The 405 has got to be the WORST freeway in the world. I used to work in Santa Monica and it always took me at least an hour to get to work everyday.
You can take the 405 to the 10. I know a few shortcuts and can fill you in on them, if you decide to live in MB.

that is a pretty long commute, how far would santa monica be from the Grove, looks like a 20 min. drive to me, of course traffic may vary, yeah the 405 always is backed up when I have been out there on business.
I MUST be near the ocean though, no point in living in Cali and not being near the ocean!

For those of you who do not know where the Grove is, it's right next to the Farmer's Market. It's on 3rd and Fairfax and isn't really close to any freeway. The closest freeway is probably the 10.

What kind of times will you be working? My wife works in Century City and we used to live in Redondo Beach, and now in Torrance. If she goes early enough (like 6:30am) she can make it in a little over 40mins. Catch it wrong and it can take 90 mins, and thats just traffic, no accidents.
Its the 405 by the Airport that really kills you. My thinking is Santa Monica should suit you just fine.

for the grove, you could also live in downtown los angeles, where i live, at a place called bunker hill tower apartments. best deal in downtown for high-rise living. it's about 15 mins from the grove, and of course the most important thing...parking garage is great! if you need more info, i can provide you rates and stuff. don't know if you're looking to rent or buy.

Why don't you just live right near the Grove? There are beautiful, new apartments around that area. That way, you're right in the middle between Downtown LA and West LA/Santa Monica.
The 405 is the freeway from HELL. I tell you that the only time there's no traffic is like between midnight and 3am. Try to avoid it like a fat girl with herpes.
The suggestion about Downtown is cool too - I used to live in Grand Promenade right next to the Ahmanson/Disney Concert Hall - loved that rea. Nice and quiet at night so you can let your S sing on the way home.
But Santa Monica is a great choice - the 10 should be ok, especially if you are used to driving 45 minutes to get to work. But that 45 minutes will be in traffic, where the S does NOT belong. Time to pick up a daily driver as well?

Cool, looks like I will be looking in the Santa Monica area or right near the grove, I don't really want to live downtown as our old office was there and it was sort of lame staying at the hotels in the city...although there are some nice new condo's in the area...I am looking to rent but would consider buying a one bedroom, I already own a place in chicago so renting probably makes more sense..
Luwin, great metaphor, hard to forget: Try to avoid it like a fat girl with herpes.
