Anyone have an idea how long it would take to get from Escondido to the meet spot on Friday morning? I don't mind leaving early but if traffic will be ridiculous then I'll stay closer.

Roughly 2.5 hours. LA/OC traffic kicks up approximately at 7am and ends around 10am. Hope this helps.

I highly recommend you stay someplace closer. That time of day... from Escondido, it could be more like 3 hours or more easily. I can put you in touch with others who have told me they have arranged to stay closer to the Malibu area, in case you want to stay in the same places.

Unless there is some strongly compelling reason to do so (friends you haven't seen in ages who will disown you if you don't make an appearance and visit them), I wouldn't stay anywhere more than 60 miles out. The closer the better. If budget is a concern, consider Thousand Oaks, Agoura Hills, or Calabassas. It's inland of the meet up area and significantly more affordable and accessible than world-famous Malibu. Assuming it's an option, you might find it easiest to simply stay Thursday night in the same place where you will be for the rest of the weekend, in the location which must remain unnamed under fear of penalty of death or other unsavory social media embarrassment.

Anyone traveling in who wants to know where others have told me they are staying on Thursday night (near Malibu), please contact me privately. Might be possible to grab Friday morning breakfast or a Thursday evening coffee with them if you are so inclined. They are good people.

Hi all!

Just a quick reminder; please don't get upset when I tell you I can't disclose info about anything other than this drive or the topics discussed in this thread. You all know I can't disclose any info that is only available via the "approved" sources about that *other* event. I know all the same stuff you know when it comes to that other topic about which there must be "no likes or comments."

I'm bound by all the same rules as everyone else on that subject regardless of my opinions regarding same. I have to respect the rules of the person throwing the party. If it was your party, I would show you the same respect and abide by your rules too. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.

Hmmm it might make more sense to crash at my parents that Thursday night.

Google Maps has a feature which allows you to estimate the amount of time you should allocate to get from point A to point B on any given day in the future based on typical historical traffic patterns. Enter your start point and end point into Google maps for directions, but instead of leaving the default as "leave now" (located just below the two points entered you have an option to choose "leave now", "depart at", or "arrive by"), choose one of the other options. It then gives you an estimation based on previous traffic patterns at that time of day. It gives a window. It's a pretty big window though. I tried it the other day with a sample address starting point somewhere in south Orange County and requested an estimate for the next morning (Friday). It told me a time that I should leave by to make it to the meet up point by a certain time. Then the next morning (Friday) at the time it told me the night before that I should leave by, I entered my sample starting point again to get the actual projected drive time and chose "leave now." The drive time it gave me was 5 minutes longer than the high end of the window it told me the night before. And if I skipped the toll road, it would take 10 minutes more than the predicted time from the night before.

So basically, yeah, it's a useful projection tool, but do a few real time checks between now and Sep 11 to see what you should realistically plan for if you are staying more than 30 miles out from Malibu.
