The feeling of falling in love just can't be beat, that's for sure!
I remember it with nostalgia.
But, and this is just one man's opinion, love is not a state of being.
Love is not a feeling, isn't sweaty palms, or a racing heart. Love isn't
the thrill of holding your lover in your arms, or find an item of clothing
and missing them because of the scent. Not to trivialize any of those
things--they are all wonderful--but, true love, I believe, has nothing to
do with any of them. Love is a commitment, borne from a conscious
decision. The feelings we have vary from day to day, they go up and
down, they grow and fade. If what we call is love is based on feeling,
how long can it last? But a commitment, a promise, that is something
that we hold onto. When you say to someone, "I love you", it is not
something to be taken lightly. It means, to me, "it does not matter
now what happens in this world--I am beside you." This is big. This
is beyond kissing behind the school and then blushing later upon recall.
This is what an 80 year old woman has for her bed-ridden husband,
who has stayed by her for the last 60 years. They are family, tied by
the time-enduring commitments they both have made. It is not
emotions that hold them together, but a promise.
To me, love is a promise that says, "I will be with you, not because you
are beautiful or sexy or because you laugh at my jokes and nod when
I tell you a story, but because of who you are, and because I have
decided to. You will stop being sexy, and I will run out of jokes,
the baby will get sick, the car will need new brakes, and I will start
growing hair in places it does not belong. But I trust in you and your
love for me. In that, I feel a deep peace, knowing we will always be
there for each other".
Does anyone actually experience this thing which I call love?
I don't know. I am idealistic, and would hope such a love would find
us all. Perhaps "find us" is not right. No, we have to create it. If
you can find a partner who is willing to create such a love with you,
then you are set. Finding a person who is smart, funny, sexy, whatever--
well that's easy. Liking and being attracted to such a person--that's
easy. The challenge is to love someone regardless. It's a challenge
I put to myself and to those around me.
