You can use a motorcycle helmet commonly for local racing etc much of the time.
If so, they have a taller and wider field of view thus making them a bit safer IMO. They don't have fireproof testing nor Roll bar testing but... if your harness works you really shouldn't be hitting the roll bar LOL.

And it is important to try them on, especially if you have a big head. I'm an XXL, and I wore the cheapest Bell helment on an autocross day. It was the right size, but not comfortable at all. Minimal padding and pressure points on my forehead.
I'll be going to these places soon, glad I came across this thread.
Also, if you still have your airbags, many people, including the SCCA, caution against full-face helmets, and suggest open face ones.
