^^ Ah, bummer. Goes that way sometimes no matter where you are. I wonder if maybe you ended up on Malibu Canyon (Las Virgenes) or Topanga Canyon instead? Those are larger roads, take you out to PCH, and are always heavily traveled by locals commuting. Lovely scenery, but not highly technical roads. And definitely heavily trafficked.
I got lost in LA with my girlfriend about 9 months ago, we ended up going through a tunnel near DTLA, it was only 4 lanes and went through a building. It gives you the chills when you go WOT through those.

There is a reason Topanga Canyon isn't on the EOM drive. It's one of the few main thoroughfares from the 101 to PCH, is heavily trafficked, has many side roads from which cars are constantly entering or exiting the roadway, and is only pleasant if you are looking to slowly cruise though the artist colony and enjoy a taste of what feels very rural just outside of LA. For that purpose, it's nice.
It's not a driver's road.
Heading to the canyons without a hardcopy map is ill-advised. You don't always end up on the roads you wanted. While you might get GPS on your phone, when you get to the areas where you lose cell signal, then you have no data connection for your phone to render the maps with and basically all you have is a blue dot on a blank screen.

Somehow, this doesn't seem like something to discuss if he plans on attending the EOM Drive, you know? Seems like you wouldn't want to announce to the world that someone's vehicle isn't strictly street legal... that is, you wouldn't want to do that if you like the guy and don't want to encourage unnecessary interest by those who might have an inclination to remove less than strictly legal vehicles from the road by making the car owner's life unpleasant by handing him tickets for various infractions.
