Default Laptop Networking Help

Hey everyone,
I was just wondering how i could transfer files from my old laptop to my new one using an ethernet cable. I got up to the point where i enabled printer and file sharing and enabled the correct options in the control panel. There is now an icon of a hand holding the folder i want to share.. only problem is i dont know how to get it over to the new laptop. if anyone could help? thx

Not going to work with a just a regular network cable unless you have a either a router or hub.

You need a crossover cable if you want to transfer data with just a cable linking the 2 PCs

Hook both notebooks to the router. Not sure what OS you on but after you have created and setup your network you will be able to see the other PCs. Then allow file sharing on each PC and hard drive. Then open them up copy and paste your data. I'm not good at explaining things haha.

Otherwise, if you have a thumbdrive or external hdd you can use that. If the other notebook is dead, then you need to take out the hdd and install it into a enclosure and transfer it via usb.

Did you get it working, gatsbee?

There are several ways you can do this, but file sharing is my preferred method. However, the USB external hard drive way might end up being faster if you hit any snags setting up your file sharing.

^ Yes, use an external or memory stick. Or google file sharing.

just get a crossover cable and then return it after you transferred all your files.
