Sorry I AM the original Spin King, and I won't spin unless it's over 45mph, redlining on 2nd gear, and at the track.

I think it's perfectly ok to have the S as your first manual shift car. I used to fishtail a bit taking turns on a wet road but I found out that I helped worsen the situation by having the clutch kicked in and upshifting while taking the turn. Bad move because of the weight going to the front of the car -- more likely for the car to wanna go sideways.
It's a learning process and you learn from your mistakes. As far as the hecklers go, it's all in good fun.
3rd and 17 mph makes sense if you're stuck in stop and go traffic, but I'm pretty sure I'm not speaking for myself by saying on ramps are definitely vtec territory.
The S wasn't meant for fuel economy. If you're looking to visit the pump once every two weeks...
buy a muthaf*qqin' Prius, you n00b!! (in good fun of course )

No need to let the people get to you. I've done 17mph in third gear, but that was in stop and go on the way to Laguna Seca and I just wanted to pace myself (worst kind of driving since you're going 17mph in third!!!).
