Default How much to spend on an engagement ring?

I've heard 2x or 3x one months gross salary. On average, I've heard friends spend between $7-15k. A lot of people also tell me that any ring more than $5k is a waste....??

*Disclaimer* This info is for a friend of mine. not me.

Two months salary is the normal rule of thumb. As to whether that's gross or net... well, that's your call.

I for one subscribe to the school of thought that putting yourself into a bigger hole than necessary is one of the dumbest things to do when starting a marriage. Then again, I'm still single...

I've heard the 2 months salary rule is a thing of the past.

Like anything, do research, and look for things you can afford.

What carat, and what type of band (metal) you'd want.

Hell, my GF and I are very open, and she practically tells me what she wants and I'll tell her where and (almost) when I'm getting it.

You can get platinum, but what's the point? White gold will do just fine.

A flawless 1 carat? Would you be able to tell a less than flawless .75 carat. I bet most people couldn't. (Well maybe some women could ).

I'm looking to spend anywhere from 1500 to 3500 on it. Cheap? Well maybe, considering I do drive a new S. But I can't justify spending over 5K on a piece of metal with a rock on it. Yes it symbolizes love and junk, but that's all it does, at least my S is practical; it takes me to work so I can buy more rings!
