Well, I don't know about you guys....but I think $500 is generous enough, and it's his homie of 20 years.
I'd personally give as much as I can to a fallen brother....errr....I mean the sucker about to get ball and chained....oh crap.....I mean...the lucky guy

my friend got me $500 gift card to good guys after 6 month.... everything in good guys was expensive and they were about to go bankruptcy... luckily, i was able to convert to compusa @ long beach right before they announced bankruptcy. I end up getting $200 worth of itune gift card and old DVD movies...

1) if you were a friend for life, and you showed up w/ some BS gift from Crate & Barrel, I'd disown your ass right @ the wedding.
2) you don't even need to bring your own envelopes now. Viet/Filipino/Chinese weddings all PROVIDE THE RED ENVELOPES right at the sign in. No pretense; them "gift boxes" are literally make shift bank vaults.
Cash is king. $100+/pp is standard for hotel/beach/golf course/garden receptions, $75-ish for the cheaper stuff/non-open bar at a Chinese restaurant. I compensate according to what I'm served, especially if i don't know the bride/groom well. I think it's the only fair way.

Hmm...I'm thinking I should make my TOTAL $500, like including my cost for being in the wedding
