Default how do 4.57 gears work?

does it just shorten each gear so that the high revs come faster, giving power sooner?

Yeah, I think you've pretty much got it right.

As I understand it:

Gears do nothing for power, but they change the availability of power at a given speed. Your car makes power from 0-8000rpm. In first gear, (simplistically), lets say you can go to 40mph stock. Putting shorter gears in will change it so you can only go to 30mph (simplistically). However, since the same amount of power is being delivered to go 0-30 instead of 0-40, you would reach that speed faster than you would with the stock gears.

You get faster acceleration with top speed/high cruising RPM as a trade-off.

get on a 10 speed in a gear(4.57). put a buddy on the exact 10 speed next to you in a larger gear(4.10).

race him down about a block, you will kick his a$$ each time if you are the same build unless he is like an olympic cyclist. but just as in the car, he will eventually catch up to you and pass you over a longer distance.

you will have better acceleration, but he will have a better top speed.

...so then, is it even worth going with a 4.57? ...how low does your top speed drop?

http://www.reverendsgarage.net/index.php?c..._calculator.php You'll be ~70mph at the top of 3rd gear in case you don't know how to use the calculator.

you will rev higher than before at all speed and have lower max speed each gear

no difference on engine output at the crank
