Default Houses built in 1950s (+/- 5yrs or so)?

I'm just starting my house hunting and in my price range and the areas I'm looking at, most of the houses were built from early 1940s to early 1950s. A coworker mentioned some things to look out for with houses/condos/townhomes build in the late 60s to early 70s (i.e. copper pipes weren't used, aluminum wiring, etc.). Since my price range limits me to houses from the 40s to 50s, what are the similar issues to look out for in construction, etc.? I know it highly depends on who the builders were, but just generic things to ask for when speaking w/ the agent. Electrical is one of the main things I'm worried about with older houses as my gf and others that have old houses can't have more than one major appliance on at one time. Of course, plumbing is a concern also, but I haven't had many direct interactions w/ plumbing issues from old houses (outside of my parent's house that needed new copper pipes put in). I'm very much a newbie to home ownership, so I apologize if I sound naive, but I appreciate any help you guys/gals can provide.

I think the most important part is those two. Electrical and plumbing, honestly it is hard to check that in depth, so I would get a pro to go crawl and make sure those two are alright. Everything else is cosmetics which is fixable. termite is also important btw. Roof will cost u money as well. aside from these major ones there's important things u should also consider, if you have a good realtor he/she can help you with that. This includes road noise, erosion, water drainage, etc.

Asbestos is KEY. Bleeds your lung like no tomorrow. Piping is probably shot, and electrical may not be up to par. Roof is wood (Termites) or best shingles.

ALOT of $$$ you need to put in to this place. Don't do the popcorn ceilings yourself. You'll bleed.

What is your price range? Old home appreciate as much as new homes. Location is KEY.

You should take notice to the electrical in the house. I have done lots of electrical restoration on old houses, and every single one was a mess.

Give me a holler if you need an asbestos survey and lead-based paint sampling. I'll give you a really good deal.

Also, make sure your frame is bolted to the foundation -- seismic.

Also, a shake roof in a fire hazard area will need to be replaced -- a big expense.

Also, a cracked concrete driveway or walkway probably means tree root damage.
