Default Hood repaint: I need your help.

Wednesday evening I was driving home from work on the 210 in La Crescenta. I was suddenly hit with a barrage of rocks in a tight cluster. I was like someone threw a bucket of rocks at me. They all seemed to hit my hood and windshield -- violently. It was dark and I have no idea where they came from. My hood now has many paint chips. It needs to be repainted.

My body shop guy, who I've used for years, says he can't just repaint my hood. He first needs to sand down all the chip areas. That and a repaint will cost $475. Also, he says my color, Laguna Blue Pearl, loses brilliance over time from exposure to the sun. Consequently, it will have to be blended in with the bumper and fenders, bringing the cost up to $1,000.

This doesn't sound reasonable. Any ideas, suggestions?

When I went to an 05 bumper, Honda World's body shop took care of me. Perfect paint match on Silverstone. I had a different color but it was a MY 2000.

1000 is way overboard. Try Peak Auto Body in Glendale. They are excellent. Laguna Blue Pearl should be just like Spa Yellow Pearl. They matched mine perfectly. Call them up.

How many hand spreads of damage are on the hood? Count how many hand spreads, and double that. This will be the amount of hours they will be charging for repair. If it's just a bunch of rock chips through out the hood, we'll just use 6.0 hours of labor for the example.

Take also into account, R&I of the front bumper, R&I/check and adjust of head lamps, R&I of windshield nozzles, etc.............(Lets just say 4 hours of R&I time)

Refinish time for the hood is 2.7 hours.

Blend on the right and left fenders should be 2.0 hours.

Tint/color match is .5 hours (if they even charge you this)

Don't know if Laguna Blue Pearl is a three stage or not, but if it is, add another 1.89 hours to the refinish time of the hood.

Color sand and buff should be about .81 hrs.

Just on labor hours, you have about 18 hours.

Even at a hook up price of $25/hr, you're already at $447.50 just for paint and body labor.

Then you have to calculate the paint and materials. Even at the hook up price of $25/refinish hour, you will be at $177.25.

$1000 sounds about right if they're charging you industry standard rate of around $42/hour.

That's the consensus in S2000 Talk as well.

Sorry to hear what happened! I am in the market for this kind of work too, however, I need to wait till the new year before I even think about it. Financial reasons are preventing me from enjoying the beauty of our vehicles.
