i heard that it's 1grand for no cat.
and also heard if your car has 80k miles(?) then you can change aftermarket cat.
yes it is $1k for no cat or hi-flow

and no we cant change our cat at 80K

CA law states that we are not allowed to replace the oem cat unless it was damaged or is no longer functionally passing smog testing. And if it were to be replaced then it should be up to OEM spec.
...Otherwise we can get fined that $1k

get that test pipe that u can weld the heat shield on to
also if cops were to look with their mirror then yes you can prolly get away with the heatshield being welded and say that it prolly needs to be replaced due to damage or high mileage when they smell it.... which ever scenario you fall under.

But how are they to judge right on the spot that the HFC is not an aftermarket universal replacement that is up to OEM specs???

the size and measurements. Most cops are trained to know the size of a typical oem catalytic converter, even aftermarket ones. They are given the power to judge that btw and in most cases they would either check for a very long time sometimes with a second eye (deputy or other cops when they sometimes call for backup). But that doesnt mean that you still cant get away from it, it just depends

Just like how cops know even if you have a basic looking apexi muffler or when they check under the hood for anything aftermarket on someones car, as an exmaple. They still know its upgraded because they are trained for those things.

Well moreso what I meant was how are they to judge/know if even what you have on there will not pass smog. Is it still illegal to have a HFC or other cats even if they will pass smog? Some supra guys I know ran high flows on their stock twin cars and they actually passed legit...

It is technically illegal unless damage forces you to replace the OEM cat. I know, how do you prove (or disprove) that? Our cars come with extended emissions warranty that is supposed to cover a malfunctioning cat, hence you'd have no legal reason to swap in a different (HFC) cat until after the warranty is up, regardless of its certification.

Hooray this does not apply with my S2000, since my cat is not viewable.
