helmet for autox and track
i like to check out thrift stores as they always got something crazy.... a blast from the past
anyways, i was at my local thrift store and i spotted this helmet... ive been meaning to get a helmet but didnt want fork out the $200-400 for it....
i saw this helmet, its dot approved and it fits my head
its on sale for $30 but it will go on sale shortly for $15....
i think it sounds like a deal but just wanted to get some input...

Damn thats cheap! ... since its DOT approved i assume its good right? Although i hear that you gotta replace every couple years after manufacture date...could be wong though. Either way for the price you may as well pick it up!

Careful with DOT approved helmets. Most organizations won't allow your helmet on course if it isn't Snell SA 2000 or Snell SA 2005 rated. They'll also allow M rated helmets depending on the competition.
DOT helmets may not be Snell M or SA rated.

The HJC CL-14 is a great motorcycle helmet. It's actually both DOT and SNELL approved -- the latter means it undergoes additional impact testing at an independant lab and has to meet certain specs. The impact foam used to make helmets degrades over time, and the rule of thumb for most bikers is to replace 5 years after the date of manufacture.
Bottom line: it'll be more than adequate for autoX or HPDEs. It may be a bit heavy since it's a full face helmet made to absorb a concrete blow to the face, but I don't think it's that big of a deal. When I do DEs, I wear a full face Scorpion helmet from my motorcycling days.
