Were they maybe referring to Tokio? It's a hot new place on Cahuenga, close to Hollywood.
Depends on what kind of food you want. Blowfish on Sunset is really good. LOVE the food at the Standard (more upscale, diner style food). I eat alot...let me know what you're looking for.

Then you'd really like the Standard Coffee Shop!
Also, Falcon on Sunset (near La Brea) is super cool and has a $25 fixed price menu tonight. A little more upscale, but the total LA experience without the attitude. It picks up after 11 pm...they have some great promoters, the place turns into a relaxed, club-like atmosphere. Make reservations! The food was pretty good, when there for my birthday this year.

Mirabelle -- mmm!.. and it's not too pricey (price is relative, for Sunset it's good). Their new chef rocks. I'm friends with the owners and valet, and they are clients of ours. It's like one big family. Mirabelle is always my choice for people new to the area. It never disappoints.
Balboa - also a hangout of mine (when I'm not paing!) One of the best steakhouses in the city, if not the best. Sunday nights all wine is half off. Very pricey. It's in the Grafton hotel and there's also Balboa lounge there too, which is a great lounge.
Kyotos? That might be the restaurant at the Riot Hyatt, called Chi? The Hyatt on Sunset is the hotel in the movie Almost Famous where a guy gets held off a balcony by his ankles to be persuaded into signing a contract. (I've babysat in that room. The penthouses are great, the rest of the hotel sucks).
There's also Miyagis. That'a big drinker spot that's always on those dating shows, along with Saddle Ranch.
