Are shims completely necessary? Its been a while since I got mine installed and I also asked my installer if I needed the kit, he had done many S2K gear swaps and that is why I went with him. He said they might be needed.

All I gave him was my car, 4.44 gears and lube. Went back a few hours and the car was done.

It might be case by case but the install kit prob doesnt get used and is kept by the installer to use it later if needed. Well that is what I was told.

Oh my bad, no I dont have any shims!

You don't need the shim kit. You reuse the oem shim and set the clearance by the crush collar. That you will need new a crush collar.

This is not true and it is bad information.

i think paul just got owned... tho he does usually know what he is talking about. haha

how much would you charge to do the rear build puddy?
I did not mean to be disrespectful but, that is not how the distance is set.
The distance on the pinion is set by the pinion (shim) thrust washer. The crush sleeve is used to set the preload on the inner and outer pinion bearings.

I charge $350 for an install using a factory crush sleeve and $200 more to use the PuddyMod solid steel sleeve.

The PuddyMod solid steel sleeve is on the pinion and the factory crush sleeve is setting off to the right front.
