Well I made it to the gas station. However in the rain and rush to get various things done I forgot to take note of how much fuel I ended up putting in the car.

I looked thru the Owner's manual and saw no mention of any reserve or reserve like function of the fuel gage. I did find this statement on pg 45, "Fuel Gage - This shows how much fuel you have. It may show slightly more or less than the actual amount." Anyway, I found this a little humorous but not very helpful. : )

The Service Manual shows a simple old style float and variable resistor setup for fuel gauging. The low fuel light is set to go off at a resistance value that is a little higher than the zero fuel resistance level. The CPU monitors the float resistance and outputs the display information to the dash indicator and low fuel bulb. So no mention of any programmed effect that could account for the fuel gage going back up from empty.

My best guess is that the float must stick occasionally. So it could indicate empty, then after negotiating an incline or a situation that would cause sloshing in the tank, the float bumps back up and sticks. ??

Hi, Jeff! Check out the Index of the Owner's Manual....under "Gas Reserve Indicator", it sends you to the page that talks about the lighted gas tank icon. But nowhere on that page does it mention the word "reserve"......??? But the index sure makes you THINK that there is some reserve.

Question

LMAO sorry Mike

I don't get it, what's up with our gauges
Could it be the weather or maybe just bad fuel filters

S2KANDRE, here's a little something for you

I was going to post something about this topic as well. You beat me to it.

Anyhow... I've had my '05 for about two months now and I've noticed that the rate at which the gas decreases when the tank is full and near empty(3 bars) seems pretty fast but, it seems to take its time in the center. I realize that's not scientific and there are many other variables. I don't have the service manual yet and I haven't crawled underneath the car but what is the tank shaped like? Is it tapered on the top and bottom? That might explain the rate change.

All that beautiful engineering and the gas gauge is non-linear... kinda funny actually.

Except if it happens on the 405!

Congrats on the car, Fencer and thanks for the post...you raise an interesting point about the tank shape.

One question remains: When people fill up when they are near empty, how many gallons does it take? Why do I never see 13.2 gallons, which the manual claims???

Any Honda techs reading this?

Running out of gas on the 405 would not only be terribly inconvenient it would be a serious safety issue.

I've never filled more than 11 gallons.
The brand of gas should not make a difference.

This is just something I have always heard....it's not S-specific.

It is to keep any tank deposits (that can occur over time) out of the engine.
