Post Garage Door Opener DIY Repair

Don't pay someone to fix your garage door opener. (DIY) It's easy.

This is how it looked inside:

Lowes/HD/Sears don't carry these parts because they want you to believe you need a whole new opener. Bastards.

Buy the repair kit here.

Get either the Drive / Worm Gear Kit or the complete Gear and Sprocket Assembly to save time.

*Update* Garage door opener is fixed. Used the complete kit -- more expensive but faster to install. The ring bearing on the electric motor will hang on the shaft -- cut the mofo bearing off rather than trying to pry it off.

*Important* Change both the spur gear and worm drive. Don't skimp or your worm drive will eat your new spur gear. Grease up the spur gear with the supplied lube in the kit. My buddy failed to do his this way and one week later, his spur gear was chewed up again. Seems like this also happened to Picturepro (Bill) too.

*Update 2* Noticed the rollers on sectional door were slightly bent. Bought all new 13-bearing rollers on Ebay. Easy to install with a 7/16 wrench.

*Update 3* The two torsion springs above the sectional door needed tightening so I made a pair of winding spring bars out of 1/2" zinc-coated rolled steel from Home Depot. It comes in 36" length so cut it in two - viola! This guy's website helped me get 'er done. http://www.truetex.com/garage.htm

Everything is working fine again. If you need help with your door or opener, gimme a shout and I'll try to help.

^^^Umm...Thanks.

Update: The torsion springs are not lifting the door sufficiently so I will tighten them before replacing the spur gear which is probably why the gear got chewed up. If I kill myself winding the springs up, then you won't see any posts here.

Bert I had the same issue earlier in the year. I picked one up on Amazon and just dealt with manually opening up the garage for a week. I'm assuming you have a liftmaster Garage opener. Fyi its not fun replacing the gear since it took me over 2hrs

Cheers for doing it yourself. Damn $2 gear will not defeat me. Although the springs might.

So if I understand correctly, the builder installed the .218, then your spur gear got chewed up when they wore out, then some crazy garage door repair dude upgraded you to .243; that failed and chewed up the 2nd spur gear; finally, you installed .252 springs (adjusted correctly). Did you do it yourself?

I should have paid attention to my ears -- noticed that the door was coming down heavy and ignored it.
