I have the Verizon Fascinate. I got tired of waiting so I just rooted it. I installed a clean 2.1 rom that's de-Binged (ugh). Hopefully, we'll get Gingerbread soon.

Although it's a barely working alpha version, development will come quickly.

Xda-developers has 2.2 ROMs. You can even run i9000 roms on the Captivate. I'm running one right now.
With the custom kernel I've got 43MB extra RAM, overclocked to 1.3 Ghz, using HSUPA, and I got rid of the godawful RFS Samsung file system and replaced it with EXT2. The phone runs flawlessly now. Faster than any other phone available, hands down. Better screen too.

Can you please point me in the direction of doing the same thing to my galaxy?

except now the new nexus is a samsung lol
That's because the Nexus S is a POS and they didn't want it to seem like too big of a deal such as the flagship model Nexus One.

i have a vibrant (t-mobile) and have unlocked, rooted, and flashed it for ATT. i'm currently on 2.2.
if you do not want to go through the steps and process (aka hassle for some). you can wait for the OTA update. samsung is very slow to update, but they are working on a 2.3 roll out.
below is a link i used for my rooting/flashing

Also, FYI to everyone else: the Galaxy S already has Gingerbread 2.3 on it. Thanks to the Nexus S being very similar to the Galaxy, ROM developers took Gingerbread 2.3 out of the NS and ported it to the Galaxy S.
The most hilarious thing about it is that the Galaxy S will have Gingerbread before Samsung even releases the official Froyo ROM in the US.

Yep... XDA-developers.com. Go to the Captivate forum, and then go to Android development. Everything you need is there. PM me for further details.
