Nate, is that up near Lompoc?
It's just before Lompoc.

You and Karen should go visit, it's a beautiful drive. PM me if you want more info or have questions, I was just there

That might take more than a weekend...

One of my favorite getaways in the Central Coast of California. You can take the 101 or the 1 up, both are beautiful, especially PCH, although it takes much longer- otherwise it's about 3 hours on the 101.

My favorite place to stay is Sycamore Springs: www.sycamoresprings.com. They have natural hot springs, a great spa, gorgeous grounds, great hiking trails, restaurant, etc.

There's also lots of great wine tasting in the area- Paso Robles, San Luis Obispo, etc. There's also excellent hiking and beaches.

The weather is always mild and it's away from all the hustle bustle of Los Angeles.

I vote for a stay at the Ragged Point Inn

I think they have under 10 rooms are the views are incredible. I would say maybe 30-50 miles north of Hearst Castle?

Weekend huh? Hmm......

Solvang up the coast north of SB head up over the mountains on the San Marcos Pass road. When you get over the top on the left is the Cold Springs Tavern, an old stagestop. Great place for a bite and to watch other exotics and bikes come and go to and from. Then down into Solvang to stay at the Peterson Village.
Best place in town. Nice rooms, great service, dinner included in the price and then (if it's summer) attend the performance at the outdoor Solvang Theatre. It's small and in the round. Stroll back to the Inn for a romantic evening.
Ignore all restuarants that do not feature Danish food. You can't find Danish food anywhere else really.

Also nearby is a small airport that offers glider ride (fun I thought). A few Wineries are nearby (movie Sideways). I ignore the tasting rooms in Solvang the wines are crap and what experience to you get tasting with a bunch of yahoo's.

Another place is up the 5 midway to SF on the grounds of Fort Hunter Liggett ( Army base).
Google Hunter Liggett and you'll find an obscure Lodge there that was once the Hunting Lodge of William Randolph Hearst. He would ride there from San Simion(sp) with his entourage to hunt and it remains to this day.
Very historic and little known. Also on the grounds is the Mission San Antonio without a doubt the most accurate remaining Mission in California.
Also, rarely visited.
