Hi, As like many of you, in the beginning I heard about a mod that was very cheap yet helpful which was the pearl style shiftknob made by companies like Muz or Voodoo. I couldn't afford it so I came up with this knowing I would get one sooner or later..
Here is my new Muz knob and my OEM knob both sat very high on the shifter!
First pick out the 1/2 drive bit which is to my far right
Use a strong drill like this Black & Decker powered one
Start at the opening of the knob and work your way down to desired inlet. Make sure not to go through the other side!
Have something under catching all the tiny materials or else you'll have a mess.
Test fit knob and drill more if desired. I did mine for about 10minutes! Careful the knob gets hot from friction..
Finished OEM knob!
Now I just got my Muz knob and put it on thinking it would be sunken already but it sat very high on the shifter! Higher then my modified OEM knob. So I decided to give it a whirl on the drill also.
Same process repeated...
After 10minutes of drilling..
big hole..
Now it sits beautifully low! Can't see the shifter stick anymore, which I could see when I first test fitted the knob on my car w/o modifying it...
And thats it.. ENJOY!!

same question... you might as well take off the knob and just wrap a big wad of duck-tape around the shifter... not to be a jackass thanks for the great thread, idea, and pictures. but does it thread if you do it your way? ( i don't see how it could)

Mine threads on just fine as there is about a fingernail of actual existing thread left and the rest is wider hollowed. Its very stable as if it was made as is. It sits on perfectly w/o wiggling. If you were to keep drilling til the very end then yes, there would be no more thread and you wouldnt beable to screw it on anymore. Mine can screw on still.
Example: If I were to yank on either knob right now while it was twisted onto the shifter they would go nowhere left/right/up or down. Only the shifter would move.
This picture might help:
