when you open it up you should see this (minus that disco ball)

that little box at the top left is the power supply. if it smells burnt that could be the problem. just go to a local fry's electronics with it in hand, and ask for a replacement. they run for about $25-45 bucks.
Nice. I'm on it. I'll post up my findings in just a few minutes.

What brand of PS unit should I buy to replace it?

I'm trying to take it apart as I type this. But it does smell burnt!

What brand, type should I go buy to replace it? Should I got to Fry's, Radio Shack, or Best Buy?
You found the problem. Look at the specs on the PS and buy the same thing. It'll say something like 250 or 320 or 400 or 500 watts, etc. Any of the stores you mentioned will have one. Fry's is usually the first place I think of.

I think I'm just going to take the specs off this unit and buy a new one. I'll come back home and finish removing it once I get back with a new one. I'll reconnect the new wiring as I disconnect the older stuff.

What specs should I take off the old unit?
Model #?
Serial #?

You prolly won't find the same model. Look for watts. You can buy more wattage but not less. For example, if it sez 350watts, but the store only has 400w, then buy that one.

Honestly if you have really important things in your computer like I do. Invoices, estimates, documents etc. I recommend putting some money and getting a good power surge that actually has a built in battery so if the power goes out you have like 20 mins before you lose power to your computer. Ive had my power go out so many times at home and fried my power supply and motherboard so I bought one of those and I no longer have issues.

i would just recommend getting the same exact wattage. i recently wanted to upgrade the PS on my comp (more demanding graphics card) and when i switched out my 380 for a 450... well... things got really hot and i smelled some burning going on. switched it back out and sent it back to fry's for refund

PS is pretty easy to switch out tho, have fun.

just look up wattage and form factor (im pretty sure the majority of PSs are now micro/ATX so shouldn't really be an issue)

You definitely need a new power supply. Once you get that replaced, you should be fine. I doubt that your hard drive was damaged, so you should still have all of your data

Wink

Thanks a million guys!!! I'm now posting from my desktop after following the advise posted on this thread!!!!

I replaced the Power Supply unit and that was it! I also bought a Surge protector strip to prevent this from happening again.

I'm really grateful to be part of S2KI.
