Red face Computer Gurus Please HELP! My computer got fried!

Hello Socal!

There was a power surge in my area and my computer got fried while being turned off! I was in the rest room brushing my teeth when I noticed the two light bulbs get extremely bright and then just turn off! I waited for about 5 mins and then the power came on.

I checked everything and my computer is the only thing that doesn't turn on. I've tried plugging it into different outlets and nothing seems to work. It's DEAD!!

I have a lot of important info on the computer and just wanted your advise on what I should do!!! Please help!!

it may have burnt your power supply. open up your computer case, and check if it smells burnt.. i don't know if it could possibly have damaged the motherboard, but i would try the power supply first..

You're speaking french to me!

I'll open it up right now. What if it's burnt! Is it easily replaceable?

prolly just the power supply... remove the screws in back that hold the PS; open the case; disconnect it from the mobo; slide in new PS; connect mobo; enjoy.

Check your power strip, replace it if needed

plug another device into it and test

Costco has a battery back up power strip for $39
I bought two

when you open it up you should see this (minus that disco ball)

that little box at the top left is the power supply. if it smells burnt that could be the problem. just go to a local fry's electronics with it in hand, and ask for a replacement. they run for about $25-45 bucks.

I'm trying to take it apart as I type this. But it does smell burnt!

What brand, type should I go buy to replace it? Should I got to Fry's, Radio Shack, or Best Buy?

Everything in the house works properly including all the power strips. My bro suggested getting a power surge devise. Do those actually work?
