A HOLIDAY break got off to a dramatic start for a former Newry-based priest after he rescued an American from the River Liffey. Fr Eddie Deeney last night said a life-saving course he had done 30 years ago came to his aid when he jumped into the freezing waters after the man. Fr Deeney, who was based at Dromantine College near Newry until 1994, has been hailed a hero following the brave act. He was driving along the Dublin quays when the man ran in front of his car and jumped 20 feet into the Liffey. The African Missions priest, originally from Rathmullan, thought the man had jumped down onto a ledge. He said:

Before us are the immortal words of Greg Laurie.
"My son was a prodigal at times, but he came back," Greg Laurie, the senior pastor at the 12,000-member Harvest Christian Fellowship in Riverside, told his parishioners Sunday.
In his autobiography "Lost Boy," Greg Laurie wrote that he lovingly spoiled Christopher, trying to compensate for the childhood he never had. Christopher was home-schooled. "My son wasn't perfect. My son, he was just a little rascal, is what he was. And he drove us to our knees many, many times in his life," Greg said.
And here is Chris Laurie's driving record.
