No complaint with T-mo, but the employee was trying to hint the phones can be had cheaper than through carriers, he hinted a number of times at it.

Haven't at all, figured an expert might chime in, I'll have a look at other options as you mentioned though. I would think there'd be a big wholesaler or something by now for phones.
Time to start up something like www.phonedepot.com and wholesale to the public.
EDIT>>> phonedepot.com exists! lol Guess I'm too late for that venture.

Depends what phone you want. Exclusive tmobile phones are only available through the carrier and stores. However, iPhones can be bought through Apple or you may be able to work out a multi phone deal through a store.
There are two main types of phone stores. Those that are operated by tmobile. Then there are those operated by third parties. Such as Broadway, Amertele (basically Asian phone stores).
You can also find new phones on CL. Some folks buy used iphone4s on CL with factory warranty, then they'll claim something is damaged and receive a new iphone4 through Apple.

I'm already on a plan that doesn't support the "free phones", it's cheaper this way so I just pay out of pocket.
Thanks for help and advice guys.
