Default car problem... ALISO VIEJO (SHANE) SOLVES IT!

Lately, the car is revving really high even though I am not really pressing on the gas pedal all that much through all the gears. The car lags when I do press hard on the gas pedal to accelerate. It seems like it is not catching the gear really well. Has any one ever experience this problem? What are some of the potential mechanical failures that I could be experiencing?
My car is at 31xxx miles. (I haven't been able to do the 30K service yet)

thanks for your help...

Your clutch is slipping. Depending on how bad it is replace it soon or take a ride on the flatbed.

edit: when you step on the gas, it will go VROOM (rpms shoot up), then rpms go down and you accelerate like normal

Check your clutch fluid level, and look by the clutch pedal to see if it's leaking any fluid down there. I had a very small leak down there, and I had to replace the clutch master cylinder.

If your clutch cylinder was going out you'd most likely have problems with the clutch refusing to slip

31xxx miles on an 01? Wow, that's great. I don't know what
the problem could be, but sounds like time to take it to the
shop.

Good luck, Lee!

thanks alot for all your help guys...

I've called Shane @ Aliso Viejo Auto like Jack and Backcracker recommended. I have an appointment to bring my car in in Friday. Hopefully it wont be too much to fix. If it is the clutch, do you guys know how much would it be to change the clutch or the clutch master cylinder?
Should I tow my car there or should I risk the 14 mile trek there?

what a way to start the new year...
