Try Westside Rentals (www.westsiderentals.com). I found it was worth the membership price when I was looking for a place to live.

It's very difficult to find a suitable location long distance, but not impossible. You may have to modify your requirements some, but if you keep looking you may be able to find everything you want staying close to your budget. Good luck.

I actually had good luck with craigslist, yes there were a few scams, but there are legitimate ones too. Just ask for whoever's facebook it is that you think about rooming with and you can find out pretty quickly if they are serious. But yeah, finding your own bedroom for under $600 is going to be basically impossible unless you live in a super sketch area. I don't mind having roomates (I don't really spend much time in my room anyways to justify having my own) so my rent is only $500 a month, but of course if I had my own it would be over $1k.

During my college years (over 5 years ago), I was paying $700 a month for a shared room that was fully furnished

I expect pricing to be higher now and also close to double for a single room.

there are alot of scams on craigslist.. but its usually the buyer (or in your case, the potential renter) that is doing the scamming.. id say the majority of people are going to craigslist to advertise their rooms for rent.. so thats probably your best place to look.

but for $600 in LA, its going to be a sketchy place as already mentioned.. you might be able to find a decent place in the San Fernando Valley though for that price.
