Default Can someone help diagnose an noise

I lost my oil filler cap. I do not know if it is in the engine bay. However, since losing the cap, I've been hearing a rattling/vibration noise coming from the engine bay that sounds like an oil cap vibrating.

However, it also sounds similar to what people describe as "a card flapping in bicycle spokes" meaning it is the timing chain tensioner that needs to get replaced.

Or worse, it could be a BAD sound altogether.

I did a thorough (as thorough as I possibly could) search through my engine bay for a full 45 minutes. I used a flashlight...searched above the engine bay, and climbed under the car, and reached my hands everywhere I could....NADA.

Can someone help me search through my engine bay, or show me a picture of where it could be, or help me diagnose the noise, as it might be the timing chain tensioner or something worse?

Help?!?

Jeff

Check between the firewall and the engine. Most likely to have fell off into there. YOu might need some seriously small hands though HTH

Look at the firewall (the wall between the engine bay and the passenger compartment) where the oilcap would be near and look straight down (get a flashlight) Your oil cap is sitting on top of your transmission/bellhousing. Get a coathanger and fish it out with the hooked end. It's a bit tricky but it works. Good luck.
