I never thought about that... but I just toss them. Maybe I should wash them now..
the hepa filter has two models, one that you can vacuum and re-use and another that is thrown away and replaced.
i believe i have the model that you can vacuum and re-use, but i throw it away and replace it anyway.

But then you have to buy more vacuum bags...so...
i have four monster cats so i am running a homles large air purifer in my room, it takes a carbon filer and hepa filer, i think they need to be changed twice a year.
I pay more for gas at the pump(or boba LOL) than i pay for the those filter
make sure you gets the quiet model, there's some compact honeywell purifer that product a very unpleasant noise, not sure if you want that to go off at night

***UPDATE***
Last week, spurred on by this thread, I bought this:

I set it up and so far it's whisper quiet in the low mode, and works really well pulling dust (and smells) out of the air.
In auto mode, it automatically recognizes increased dust or smells and modulates the fan speed and duration by itself. In night mode it's silent but runs on low.

Those that are interested should check out NASA's study on house plants as filters. Takes a little more time to set up, and figure out what type of plants to get, but thats just another option.
