Anyone in the finance industry?
Hey SoCalers -
Since finishing law school and taking the bar exam (twice), I've come to the conclusion that, regardless of whether I pass this last time or not, I need to kickstart a career. That being said, I've done some cursory research into financial planning as a career. I've considered estate planning my preferred law practice area for a while, and I think of financial planning as a natural extension or the "bigger picture." Now this is where I could use the help/advice of the SoCal community.
I'm currently in the interview process at a large financial group, applying for a position as a financial planner. The job entails getting a Series 7 and 66 designation from FINRA as well as a CFP. Problem is, my background in finance is virtually non-existent, though I'm willing to learn and they're willing to train. Before my next meeting with them, however, they've asked me to "interview" planners at some of the bigs (Morgan-Stanley, Merrill-Lynch, etc.) and learn some of the basics about the industry and the investment products commonly used. They essentially want me to learn about what it takes to be a CFP, what they do, and how they do it. The request seems a little odd, but I'm not in a position to balk at it if I'm going to be serious about this as a career.
So, if anyone here is a CFP, ChFC, Financial Adviser, or something like that, or knows one willing to donate about an hour and a half of time to me, it would be much appreciated. Of course I plan to contact these companies directly as well, but I figure the SoCal network may provide some good leads.
Thanks for reading.
