hey Back-cracker thanks for the law quotes. i read over it, and if i understand correctly, mufflers are legal as long as the resulting exhaust noise is < 95db? carb certification is not needed?

2nd, the quotes reference an "exhaust" system, not muffler. does this mean that headers would be okay if the resulting noise is < 95db?--no carb certification necessary? or i guess there would be other applicable laws in this case?

a header needs to be carb certified in ca. and i don't know of any.

just about all will pass the sniffer test w/out a problem, but if they smog guy checks it out for the visual inspection you may not pass based on what header it is and whether or not its covered/coated/wrapped.

a big shiny header w/not heatshield is kind of a give away.

I'm trying to find this code, where it states "any modification to the car is illegal" but I can't seem to locate it.

In terms of the headers, there is a code somewhere which states, if the aftermarket product causes the car to use more gas, then its illegal.

I assume everything needs to have a carb EO #.

One of the reasons why I like Mugen, b/c it comes with a heat shield that looks OEM. The exh. even looks oem and sound OEM and passes Laguna Seca <92db.

The intake... well that's another story

I welded up a stock heat shield to my TP

Marcos is using it for now.

so summary

I can

1) Go get it signed off by passing a DB meter

(Highly you won't pass. How are you going to prove your OEM DB? Even if you have your friend come with the OEM, any noise louder than OEM then you failed.)

or

2) replace the stock exhaust
(100% pass, less headaches)

or

3) claim it's an OEM replacement because I got into an accident
(They don't care if its a replacement or not, that's your responsibility not the bodyshops. They won't sign out for that, unless they're dumb)

or

4) Drive my friends black Ap1 with stock exhaust and put on my license plates

(And if caught, get sighted for improper registation, improper insurance, possible to TOW that car away/impound for 0 improper registration.., until they can prove who is the owner of the car.

ok, so does anyone who has had a fix-it exhaust ticket before know whether they check VIN numbers?

The original cop/pig never checked my VIN, all he did was ask me for the year of my car. As far as I know, I don't think they can tell apart an 00 vs an 02 AP1.

Do they check VIN's a majority of the time, sometimes, or rarely?

If you happen to know the answer, I would def appreciate it

Thanks much

hopefully some of this info will help those of you in the near future. i know more and more of us will get pulled over for "modified exhaust" in the near future
