405 is SCREWED
Don't use the 405. A crane fell over, and the fwy is fully stopped.
CBS) SHERMAN OAKS, Calif. A crane overturned on the San Diego (405) Freeway Friday, trapping the operator and snarling traffic, authorities said.
The crane toppled at about 1 p.m. at Valley Vista Boulevard, said Brian Humphrey of the Los Angeles Fire Department. The crane operator was freed about 2 p.m. and was airlifted to UCLA Medical Center in serious but stable condition, Humphrey said. His exact injuries were not immediately available.
"The paramedics were actually face-to-face with this man for more than an hour," Humphrey told KCAL9. "They described him as conscious, alert and in good spirits. He was very cooperative. And of course that's typically a great thing to hear, because if people are in good spirits it usually bodes well for their response and recovery to medical treatment."
Drivers in a big rig and a sport utility vehicle swerved to avoid the boom of the crane, which partially came to rest on a freeway lane. Those motorists suffered minor injuries and were taken for hospital treatment, he said.
The circumstances of the accident were under investigation.
The crane was being operated at a construction site that is part of the project to improve the interchange between the San Diego Freeway and the Ventura (101) Freeway, Humphrey said.
All northbound lanes remain closed as a precaution, California Highway Patrol Officer Patrick Kimball said.
According to the CHP traffic log, the northbound lanes will be closed until 4 p.m., at the very least.
