The glass isn't being used as a tabletop, the last 8 inches or so of the lense is just the lense hood.
the straps are for the 1D on the telephoto lense (the red/black one) and the other one (black) is for the lense itself. since the lense is so heavy, it supports the camera rather than the other way around.
and yeah, if you guys ever go to any sort of pro sports or even college sports event where AP will be there covering, you'll see a lot of guys/girls like this. They sit in one corner the whole time and never move. Photos are d/led to their laptops, edited, and wirelessly transmitted to their editors via WiFi or satellite depending on the location.
