I was going to pull the trigger on a spa yellow in March/April if you remember that post (and I could even live with a repainted front bumper), but the compression numbers across a few cylinders on that car came up as lousy when I got it inspected. It was $12k for a 2003 w/ 50k miles.
I'm just being picky because I keep my cars for a long time, so I'd like to get exactly what I want.

I'm wondering what the factor is here that is stopping you from getting the car? Is it price?

If you keep your cars for a long time, get something that fits your budget and plan on getting a new motor down the road. I'm serious. We're almost at 100K and when the motor goes, it's new motor and fresh paint for us. Will be like a new car. Might even change the seats.
Ap2 04 60K 15.7K is what I paid. Savings were 7K at the time which pay for new motor and seats with cash to get a paint job.
It's all how you slice the pie. Just suggesting you view it differently.
So in your case, $12K car which is dirt cheap, and put aside $3k for a new motor. I highly doubt much is wrong with 50K on it. If you look at what you get for $12K in cars in general, hard to get much worth driving. I know, because we want a second cheap car with AWD and gets 28-32mpg, it's not possible right now.
